Flu 2012-2013
What sort of flu season is expected this year?
Flu seasons are unpredictable in a number of ways. Although epidemics of flu happen every year, the timing, severity, and length of the epidemic depends on many factors, including what influenza viruses are spreading and whether they match the viruses in the vaccine.
CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine protects against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season.
All flu viruses are spread from human to human through coughing and sneezing, and when someone touches something with flu viruses on it then touches their mouth or nose.
Prevention
Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is encouraging Everyone 6 months and older to get a flu vaccine.
Take these everyday steps to protect your health:
- Cough or Sneeze into a bended elbow or tissue. Throw the tissue away immediately.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
