What does a Health Records Technician do?
A Health Records Technician is responsible for coding and abstracting
from patient records all pertinent diagnostic and procedural information
using Clinical Coding systems and conventions. Abstracts and enters
specific data elements in the hospital computer database according
to consistent definitions.
What qualifications and experience does the hospital require?
- Graduate of an accredited school for Medical Record Technicians,
or successful completion of the HRT program and exam conducted by
CCHRA/CHA.
- Completion of the Coding Basics program sponsored by AHIMA or similar.
- Certified Coding Specialist credential required or in progress.
- Minimum of 2 years medical records experience.
- Two years experience in an acute care hospital using coding and
abstracting skills.
- Professional affiliation to relevant association.
